Birth defects Caused by Zoloft Raised Numerous Lawsuits
Zoloft, an antidepressant from Pfizer was on the receiving end of a number of complaints because of its connection with congenital defects. It has been reported that a number of women who took the medication when they were pregnant gave birth to babies with heart defects. A skull deformity, craniosynostosis is reportedly linked with the use of Zoloft during pregnancy too. Another is that infants had alarming symptoms like seizures, tremors, irritability, frequent crying and decreased oxygen in the blood. Aside from its association with birth defects, questions were also raised whether or not Zoloft increases suicidal thoughts. A number of other complaints and lawsuits were raised against this medication but the majority is related to birth defects.
How Zoloft Works
Zoloft is a medication primarily prescribed for patients suffering from major depression. It belongs to the Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) class which means that it increases the uptake of serotonin in the brain. Our mood is greatly influenced by serotonin, a brain chemical which is excitatory in nature. Decreased serotonin levels in the brain can show signs of depression whereas increased levels cause mania or symptoms related to mania. Zoloft is also used in other cases like Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Panic Disorders, Anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and mood-related disorders.
How Zoloft Affects the Growing Fetus
As mentioned earlier, lawsuits were filed because of reported Zoloft birth defects. Inquiries on Zoloft indicated that it has an effect on the fetus when taken even after the first trimester where organogenesis is done. This results into several heart complications. The most common cardiac defects associated with the use of Zoloft are Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) and Atrial Septal Defect (ASD). These are rather serious conditions when left untreated. A rare lung condition called Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension (PPHN) can also occur with Zoloft use. This condition is characterized by constricted arteries towards the lungs which may be the reason why the neonate’s lungs can’t fully adapt to the life outside of the utero. The amount of blood that is carried onto the lungs will be very limited which will result to limited oxygenation into the bloodstream. The mentioned Zoloft birth defects are serious and can be life threatening which prompted the affected individuals to file for lawsuits.
