The Book “Is” The Store!
MultiMedia eBooks are not solely about providing a richer client experience, greater satisfaction, and commitment. Correctly done, they’re a natural fit for upsells and CrossSells, and might be the best platform to date to sell more high-quality products.
The idea of a publisher referencing other products isn’t anything new. Recommended publications, either by the writer or the publisher, are commonly listed at the end of most books. The issue has long been to get the reader to note and, just as significantly, to take action.
But first, a little summary of the “old school” problems just alluded to…
Issue 1: Readers basically have to read those tallies of other publications, buried at the very end, essentially outside the end, of the book. Few trouble. But for those that do, they need to write down what they are interested in, go to their computer, Google it (or merely go to Amazon and search for it there) purchase it, and wait for it to be shipped.
It may not seem like a big thing, but it is essentially Big. The active person, simply distracted by lots of more pressing issues, is more likely to say, “I’ll do that later.” Most of the time, later never comes.
Issue two: Not only are these upsells buried at the back of the book, they are unimaginative in what they offer. This is principally due to order publishers and writers restricted by standard, Oldschool publishing ideas.
In other words, think beyond books and CDs and audiotapes. Think about products and services the customer would likely be interested in and then give it to him in a fast, digital download form.
Contemporary consumers are very demanding. Not only do they want more of what they like, they want it now, and they don’t want to leap thru rings to get it. So if you make them work, you’re going to lose the sale. Simple as that.

Now enter the Amazon Affiliate program…
As you know, Amazon is the largest bookseller in the world (no matter what Barnes & Nobles says).
But get this…
Eighty p.c of Amazon’s revenue comes from its affiliate program. What that implies is that the overwhelming majority of Amazon’s cash comes from people selling other individual’s product, and not just books! Eighty %!
Here is where it gets a little fascinating for us and where Amazon’s bipolar tendencies actually shows. As a web retailer, they are the undisputed kings of affiliate marketing. But as a hardware / software manufacturer, i.e, the Kindle, they went the closed, proprietary, black box way. And history will show inside six months — well actually the writing’s already on the wall — that this direction may have been remarkably near-sighted.
What does this have to do with a MultiMedia eBook becoming a web storefront?
To start with, it shows how not to build an eBook reader device .
Let me put my neck on the line here.
Within a year, Amazon will have a true keyboard-less gadget similar to the iPad. This may happen not through choice, but by shopper demand for all-in-one solutions instead of stand-alone devices that require the consumer to tote around another piece of hardware.
Now the better news for writers, book publishers and almost anyone who needs to earn cash from Multi media eBooks is…
You don’t have to create all of your own content to earn income. What this means is that you don’t have to create all the additional products the shopper would find attractive after or “during” their read of your Multi media eBook.
Even today, if you needed to, you could join the Amazon affiliate program … it takes about ten-minutes to sign-up … pick the products you are feeling your customers would like, and implant links to them in your Multi media ebook wherever you like. And when a reader clicks one of “your” links and buys something, anything on Amazon, you get paid a commission!
And it doesn’t stop with Amazon.
There are more affiliate portals out there that generate billions in commissions. My favourite is Clickbank, but there are dozens of them. And I am yet to find a single one who charges even a penny to enroll.
Simply don’t don’t get carried away. Don’t change the theme of your book to fit the most important affiliate opportunities .
And listen to me, you will be tempted when you see the types of commissions you can make on Clickbank and other affiliate portals. Stay in your area of expertise, and if you don’t have a higher worth product, get in touch with someone who does.
And just like that, your book just became a speciality store!

Remember, you don’t have to create everything you sell on the internet. Actually if you try, chances are you can give up out of the sheer magnitude of effort.
But if you already have a massive inventory of books prepared to be digitized, go for it. Just be absolutely certain they are Multi-media prepared so that you can upsell your own stuff, and that way, not pay any affiliate commissions.
So for you writers and book publishers out there, greener pastures await you. All you’ve got to do is do some easy research, and get going.
Whether the “eBook is the storefront” idea includes your merchandise, or somebody else’s, or a combination of both, is entirely up to you.
