Making A Living In Horse Art
This lady Walla Walla artist says that every horse is famous to the person who owns it. Winning the championship is never an issue for the owner. From a ranch on Springdale Road comes an artist who fully grasps this love and has made a business out of it. She does horse paintings and photographs of horse shows. Though most of her clients are horse lovers, she has been commissioned to paint famous horses, like one famous actor’s championship endurance mount, Shur Raff Zi.
For her, business is just a formality, and she thoroughly enjoys her work. Even as a teen, her interest in horses was sparked. She started sketching nuns at age 11, which she continued to work at. The early drawing experience gave her a feeling for shading which gives her horse portraits a reach out and touch reality. The canvas gives her a place to record the uniqueness of each horse. Her style of painting is working from a photograph. She is not one to sketch on site, unless notes and quick marks count. She says she has encountered really finicky horse owners. They may ask the artist to highlight a certain angle or characteristic.
Many dedicated owners know everything about their pets, from facial expressions to cowlicks, which makes them better experts than artists who have seen the animals for the first time. An actual likeness of their horses is worth more than an idealistic image. Her pictures were of all breeds in all kinds of activities, from barrel racing to cutting.
Particular care must be taken with action shots. For example, a horse can look gawky when cantering. A horse on the move looks best under a telephoto lens.
