Deciding On The Most Practical Horse Barn Floor Plans: It’s All In The Design
If you’re a horse lover like me, you’ll more than likely agree with the notion that horses should be treated like one of the family. And on that note, let’s talk about finding the right horse barn floor plans for you.
Regardless of whether you are constructing a smaller horse barn or a great big ole’ barn, you need to put just as much time and effort into constructing a home for your horse that’s safe comfortable, roomy and pleasant.
Building a high quality barn by investing a little bit more money in the beginning should really help you save time and money in the years to come. So precisely what factors should you take into account and not skimp on when laying out your floor plans?
Barn Location
Decide on an area on your parcel which has good water flow and drainage, has close connection to utilities and easy accessibility for cars and trucks more but would save you a lot in the long run since the manure, horse urine and water from cleaning will not rot this area if it’s been treated. According to news.google.com there are plenty of eco-friendly options available. The remainder of the barn can be built with plywood or rough cut 10′x12′.
Doors
You should try to avoid metal doors because they are usually noisy if it’s windy and particularly in case your horse has a habit of head butting, or likes to kick or play with it. Dutch doors are usually more popular and folks like the notion of the horse sticking their head out of the top of the upper portion of the door, but if you are planning on always having your horses in there all night, I’d personally opt for a whole door on hinges.
Airflow
Good air movement is crucial. Find some econonomical vent style windows, 2 by 2 or even 2 by 4 feet and hang them out of reach of your horses. This allows the hot stagnant air to move up and out. For anyone who is in a very hot climate, you will probably need to put in a roof exhaust fan. They don’t cost too much, usually about $200 or so.
Light
If you want electric and lighting for the barn, place the lighting at the back of the stall, up high and out of the way. Windows usually do a sufficient job for allowing in natural light although skylights are best. Of course, you will want to consider the location of the sun and if it’s going to let in strong sunlight at the hottest time of day, then you should put them in another location.
Floors
I would use 10 to 18 inch gravel around the floor of the stall. Eventually you could buy some rubber mats and put those on top. The perimeters of the stall should have concrete to ensure that water can’t get in or out and also to stop the horses from digging holes in the corner of the doorway. For those who have an aisle then you might want to consider putting in concrete with asphalt over the top. Asphalt is significantly less slippery.
The only issue with this is the effort required to get the end results you want. While these steps can get you phenomenal results and certainly a fantastic barn for your horses, the time it will take to finish all these steps on your own can be overwhelming.
