Having lately launched an American version of the UK’s number one property and travel show, A Place in the Sunshine, on Discovery’s Velocity network, I’m frequently asked what I think the differences are in the American vs the Brit version of this programme. My answers go beyond creative selections in TV programming : A Place in the Sunshine is about exploring the idea of living in another country, in another culture and taking on the adventure of a new lifestyle in a new land.
It is a common perception that North Americans travel abroad less than most Europeans and Australians. This notion that Americans may initially be less enthusiastic to embrace the idea of making an investment in property, or relocating for some heavy part of time in a foreign country, should come as little surprise. Originally, I was under the impression that these hurdles were likely logistical, but the more experience I’ve had in this area, the more I have recognised they are largely psychological.
My own journey continues to teach me that the benefits of overseas travel and exploration massively outweigh the costs and there has never been a better time for Americans to reconsider how many of their bounds are self-imposed.
According to one study carried out by Expedia, only 38 percent of USA citizens took the vacation time allotted to them in 2010, which is low even by American standards. Doubtless, a high unemployment rate and a struggling economy has contributed to US citizens ‘ agitation, giving them another “reason” to stay home. It should go without saying that people who don’t even take their vacation days are doubtless not excited to venture further outside their comfortable area right now, without some robust encouragement.
My challenge is to remind viewers that those that are rather more informed, more aware and more adaptive are overpoweringly sought after, and rewarded, by bosses in a competitive workforce. And, just as significantly, I want to evoke my audience that the payoff is the viewpoint gained through a more worldly experience that will lead to a rather more satisfied existence overall. I realize that the fundamental format of the show is merely a property search, but the larger picture in each episode is this deeper quest.
So , that has been my focus in the revised American format, to work on not just how US people go about relocating in these assorted, interesting, world locations, but why. Accepting an invitation into the blue means taking on unfamiliar territory, figuratively and literally, and demanding individual growth of one’s self. You learn to evolve and become more aware and informed in the course of any particular day’s discoveries. Cultural immersion includes the type of education that can’t be bought from books.
Nobody could have explained to me the spirit of journey in New Zealand, the magical feeling of the old town of Dubrovnik or the keenness for holistic living I witnessed in Belize. For the short term cash so many believe they are saving avoiding aeroplane fare, they’re forgetting the lower cost-of-living and regularly higher quality of life that they might be able to achieve elsewhere. And while living abroad use to regularly mean being out of touch, in today’s wifi-and-Skype world it’s hard to be anywhere that isn’t quickly transformable into a virtual office or remote communication center.
International relocation does not have to mean leaving your life behind. It means taking your life to a completely new level moving forward.
In the end on the American version A Place in the Sunshine, I’m steering a controlled number of clients to other countries in the middle of a larger journey that could lead to an investment in a property abroad. What I hope that the bigger number of viewers take away from the each episode is a topped curiosity to grow their own horizons and consider what else is out there to experience.
